LANSING – House Speaker Andy Dillon (D-Redford Twp.) today announced that the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging (OSA) is accepting nominations for its 2007 "Senior Citizen of the Year Award" and encouraged local groups to nominate outstanding senior volunteers.
"Our seniors contribute a great deal to our community, and they deserve to be honored for all that they do," Dillon said. "I encourage our local community organizations to take the time to nominate a senior volunteer who gives their all to make our community a better place."
The "Senior Citizen of the Year Award" is sponsored by OSA and the Commission on Services to the Aging. Two awards are given every year to two residents age 60 and older for their contributions to help others in our state. The two award categories are Leadership and Service. Awards are given to residents who show leadership in the community and service to others. Award recipients will be invited to attend an awards ceremony on Aug. 27 at the Michigan State Fair in Detroit.
Nominees must be at least 60 on or before July 6. Nominations must be submitted by an organization, and an organization's presiding officer must sign the nomination.
"Our seniors serve as role models to all of us – especially our children," Dillon said. "The dedication our senior volunteers show to our communities should serve as an inspiration to all of us."
