Senate Majority Leader Michael D. Bishop and House Speaker Andy Dillon today announced appointments to the Legislative Commission on Government Efficiency and the Legislative Commission on Statutory Mandates.
The efficiency commission is created pursuant to Public Act 96 of 2007 (Senate Bill 396) and is charged with reviewing the functions of each state agency, the monetary and labor costs associated with those functions, and to research the means to make those functions more efficient.
The mandates commission is created pursuant to Public Act 98 of 2007 (Senate Bill 398) and is charged with reviewing all funded and unfunded mandates imposed by state government on local units of governments, all reporting requirements associated with those mandates and to determine the complete cost of each mandate.
Both commissions are to issue final reports to the Legislature, with specific recommendations, no later than Oct. 1, 2009.
"We've appointed a diverse group of very talented people," Bishop (R-Rochester) said. "I look forward to reviewing the commissions' work and recommendations, and implementing their ideas to streamline state government."
"These commissions were formed as part of the bipartisan budget agreement reached last fall to address the state's fiscal crisis," said Speaker Dillon (D-Redford Twp.). "The commissions consist of a talented group of citizens from both the private and public sectors to help us identify and implement cost-saving reforms in state government. I am grateful that these individuals have agreed to serve the families of Michigan and look forward to their recommendations."
